Norumbega Tower

A stone tower built in 1889 to commemorate a Viking settlement that almost certainly never happened.
Eben Norton Horsford was convinced that Norse explorers built a city on the Charles. He was wrong, but he built a 38-foot stone tower to mark the spot anyway, and it is still standing at the edge of the river.
It is a five-minute stop rather than an afternoon — park carefully on Norumbega Road, read the plaque, and continue on to the river path. A genuinely odd and wonderful piece of Newton history.
